The Purpose

The goal of this tournament is to provide students with a family friendly atmosphere to expose students to a Tae Kwon Do Tournament without the financial burdens and the mind set pressures of “I’m not good enough to do tournaments.” It is also to provide valuable practice in a tournament setting for those who have done or even frequent tournaments.

This tournament is designed to give students the experience of doing a tournament but in an atmosphere of a practice. Think of it as a Tournament Work Shop. This will allow judges the ability to give advice to the competitors to help them to grow in their Tae Kwon Do Experience as well as competitors being able to make suggestions to each other. Through this long lasting relationships can be born and all students can work to improve.

All of this and having the opportunity to work together as Martial Artists to raise money for a very needy cause. It is the goal of the Manchester Martial Arts Academy to provide this Tournament Annually with the intent of Raising Money for a Needy Cause every year whether it be here in the US or Globally.

Students will gain great Tae Kwon Do knowledge, and get the satisfaction of participating in an event that was able to raise money for a very needy cause.

This year our Helping Hands mission is to Haiti. Mr. and Mrs. Palmer, owners of the Manchester Martial Arts Academy will be traveling to Haiti to help in the recovery process. So much of the money being donated to Haiti gets lost in the administrative fees and the “middle men.” Mr. and Mrs. Palmer are personally taking this gift from the Martial Artist of the Midwest to Haiti and will see to it that 100% of the money is used wisely and is given to the people of Haiti. Check out www.handsandfeetproject.org to see their mission.
Tournament Rules

How a winner is determined: In point sparring competition, the contestant who scores 3 points first, or is ahead on points at the end of two minutes is the winner. These points are awarded by decision of the four corner judges and referee. One point is awarded for a hand or foot technique to a legal mid-section target. One point is awarded for a legal technique to a legal high target. In Olympic Sparring competitors will compete in two 90 sec. rounds with a 30 sec rest between rounds. Each competitor will attempt to score as many points as possible. Points will be awarded when permitted techniques are delivered accurately and powerfully to legal scoring areas. One point will be awarded for legal attacks on the area of the trunk and two points for an attack (foot only) to the head. If a knock down occurs and judges determine that it was caused by a technique that was scored, the referee may award an additional point.

Legal and Illegal Target Zones: The only legal areas are high-section (from neck up) for foot techniques and mid-section (above the belt to the neck) including both sides of the torso, for hand and foot techniques. For point sparring, techniques are to be controlled to 1” or less. Light uniform contact indicates this. Illegal target areas are the whole of the spinal column (i.e., neck, back of head, backbone), groin, knees, throat and eyes. Blind techniques are prohibited. Olympic sparring: Head area (foot techniques only) the areas above the collarbone, including neck, face, ears, top and back of head. Trunk which is covered by the hogu between the armpit and the pelvis. This includes the back, except for the spine. Attack by fist or foot techniques are permitted

Attacking Weapons: The only attacking tools to be used are the front fist, ball of the foot, heel, knife foot, and instep of the foot.

Illegal Techniques: Biting, scratching, holding or clawing, intentionally avoiding close contact, and attacking illegal targets are prohibited. Blind techniques and sweeping techniques are prohibited. Hand techniques to the head or face are prohibited unless both competitors agree to the AAU rules of point sparring and have the appropriate safety gear to allow for such a technique.

Warnings, Point Loss & Disqualification: Warnings will be issued for rule infractions. Two warnings constitute minus one point. Quarreling with any judge, attempting to end the match by injury of opponent or the infliction of bruising, swelling, cut or bleeding will result in disqualification. The referee may disqualify any contestant at any time.

Grand Championship: This match shall consist of two, two-minute rounds with a one-minute rest between rounds.

Forms: Forms will be judged by a panel of five judges. Each judge may award a possible ten points. The highest and lowest scores will be disregarded, and the final score will be the total of the remaining points.

Change to APRIL test date
The April test date needs to be changed to March 27th due to Easter weekend. This still will give everyone almost 7 weeks between tests, so we should be able to learn our new forms and everything. Remember to mark your calenders with this change.
